Experiences with deploying SharePoint as a global Intranet platform
The speaker will discuss how a large global business and professional services organisation decided in 2006 to adopt SharePoint 2007 as their platform for a new global Intranet. He will cover the design and adoption challenges they faced in developing an information architecture that would be consistent for users  and administrators while being flexible enough to suit business units with differing structures and needs. He will also talk about the variety of issues they uncovered as they worked to make the platform perform reliably and well for users around the world, including the case they found where two optimisations each separately made the system faster, but together made it slower!

Developing Silverlight apps on the 2007 platform for use in 2010
The discussion will cover the setup, coding and testing of a Silverlight Control that uses SharePoint List data to provide automatic navigation. The concept will specifically focus the development using Visual Studio 2008 with Silverlight 3 under MOSS (SharePoint 2007) that can be easily migrated to SharePoint 2010.

The purpose is to demonstrate a method that works in both environments and ability to provide “web part” functionality without having to access the file system of a server and without using WSP’s. In addition, it will enable 2007 developers to use newer technologies until ready to move up to 2010.

The process will cover the complete development cycle from creating the initial site, prepping the MOSS site to support Silverlight and working through the coding and debugging process.

The takeaway will be some ideas on how to use Silverlight with SharePoint Web Services, developing to support both 2007 and 2010, debugging directly with Silverlight and deploying for end users. The sample project developed will be provided at the end of the session.
